Our Story
I was a rescue before I knew I was…
All my life, I’ve tried to help animals wherever and whenever I could. From bringing home stray dogs and cats to helping a baby
bird or bunny that found themselves in a dangerous situation, the impulse was never a choice—it was a necessity. I would even
visit our local shelters, placing holds on puppies and kittens with a kill date, just to buy them more time to find a home.
The biggest surprise in my life was a baby feral pig that showed up at my home on December 3, 2024. He inspired this rescue
and became its living legacy. We named him PigPig. He was only about 12 weeks old when he arrived here.
He was skin and bones and way too young to be away from his family. To my surprise, little PigPig found my paint horse, Bliss. Bliss was a rescue following Hurricane Irma in 2017.
PigPig was quick to learn that Bliss was a very sloppy eater and that everything she dropped was a much-needed free meal for him. Bliss wanted nothing to do with this tiny stranger and did her best to drive him away by kicking and biting him, but his hunger kept him coming back.
Before I knew it, my horse had become best friends with this feral pig. They were even featured in the Observer newspaper and on Fox13 News. I attempted to put up fencing to keep PigPig contained, but it was just too much expense and work for me to accomplish alone.
Before I knew it, 4 months had passed, and PigPig was sexually maturing He kept testing fencing until he found a weak spot, then as quickly as he had arrived, he was gone. Bliss missed her little friend and looked for him every day.
Over 2 months had passed since PigPig had left. Everything I had read about feral pigs indicated he wouldn’t be coming back. At the end of June 2025, I received word that a family had a show pig they needed to rehome. They learned early on that Hank was special, and they decided to spare his life from slaughter and to keep him as a pet.
While all that was well and good in theory, reality painted a different picture. Hank was growing. Their somewhat small property wasn’t enough to keep a massive 350 pig.
After exhausting all possibilities to place Hank in a new home, I received a phone call. Knowing the story behind my horse and the feral pig, it was thought that possibly Hank could come here and pick up where PigPig left off. I never dreamed what would happen next.
Three days after Hank arrived, PigPig came home. Now here I am with a rescued horse and two pigs. While Bliss and Hank were too big to get under the fence, my fencing issues for PigPig were still a major hurdle. PigPig left again after 2 months, leaving both Bliss and Hank missing their little friend.
It’s now been over 4 months since PigPig left, and reports that he may have been hit and killed by a car. I pray it wasn’t him, but there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think of and remember him.
He’s the reason behind ArrayA2Z Rescue and Sanctuary.
